I am a student in debt - what should I do?

Student debt is a growing concern in the UK to parents as well as students. Most students now leave higher education with debts well in excess of £12,000.

Before you go to University/College make sure you have applied for any grants that you may be eligible for. Most are means tested so it will depend on you and your family's level of income.

Whilst you are studying there are a number of loans and grants available to students. Grants generally do not have to be repaid but are means tested or dependant on other factors. Loans will normally need to be repaid.

If you need a loan, a loan from the Student Loan Company is the best option. They offer a very low interest rate and you won't need to start paying them back until you are earning an average wage.

If you are in debt, take a part time job around your studying and look at ways you could manage your money more effectively.
