Being in debt and owing money is a civil matter as opposed to a criminal matter. This means that normally you cannot be sent to prison for owing money, or having outstanding debts.
However, you may get your assets taken from you, such as your home repossessed, and if you get a CCJ you will find it very hard to get credit, open a bank account or be accepted for a mortgage or tenancy agreement for example.
